Sexy Zombie

Hey all!
It's been a rather occupied week, and I've been gearing up to do some larger pieces. Until then, I had a little something I began over the weekend and managed to get done in time for International Zombie Month. I had the idea of a woman, only freshly bitten, with enough time to make it to a hospital, die, turn, and then begin feasting on the staff where she's still got a tiny glimmer of humanity about her. I thought all this, then I thought make her hot :)
Many thanks to Dera for the pose.

Leigh

Hey all! Sorry it's been so long since my last update. Hopefully this piece will make up for my tardiness. I had a bunch of old reference photos lying around from when I did an extensive portrait shoot with my good friend Leigh. To keep myself busy, I decided to try and render one of those photos, one that had long since been my favorite. Hope you enjoy this until I post something more.
It looks like I've got a gallery show coming up in about 2 months, so I've got until then to get some paintings out of the way :) Wish me luck, and I'll do my best to keep posting.

The One What Explodes

Hey all! This is my newest addition to International Zombie Month. It's a pretty proud homage to the fact that no zombie game is complete without one that explodes when you shoot it. In tribute to that, I present to you the most explodey zombie ever to be infected. Since I don't feel liek repeating myself, a longer story for this guy can be found on my devianart, which can be found at tristan-despero.deviantart.com. Hope you enjoy it as much as any other flesh-rending undead scourge. It's worth noting I got the technique for this piece from Wayne Barlowe, after backward's engineering his brief preview of his DVD for the Gnomon workshop. Sleep well! :)

The Mooncalf

Hey all! Just another fast coffee-shop sketch to keep the blog going. We had another Drink & Draw night the other night, though with a much smaller turn-out, and I made a rougher version of this sketch. Today, I decided to go the extra mile and do a little rendering.
This is an old character of mine who I haven't touched in like three years. He was the leader of a small team of supernatural beings who dealt with the unseen threat from more uncontrollable otherworldly elements. Think of a non-military version of the B.P.R.D. A group that's a little bit rougher, a little less disciplined and a little more dangerous. All the members take their roles from the major arcana in the tarot. He goes by the name Mooncalf, having long since abandonned his true name. He's a powerful sorcerer (occupying tarot place #1, the Magician). His powers are drawn from his connection with darker, other-dimensional creatures, with whom he shares a twisted lineage. He's terribly powerful, but very withdrawn. His strength lies in the fact that many of the events and things he's forced to deal with often share some lineage with him.
More on the way.

Bearosaurus: Tonal

We have the second step of the Bearosaurus illustration. I'm painting this piece digitally, and going for a fairly old-school technique, shown to me by the rather impressive Meinart Hansen. Here we see the next stage after my linework: the tonal comp. I decided on a fairly mid-tone burnt umber color to start with, and used the burn tool to apply shadows. I also applied a very rough background, which I'll elaborate on as I begin to paint, but wanted to keep it fairly loose at this point, so as not to overpower my artwork. I'll use this to move into the color phase. I'll also try and create some textured brushes, just to get the hair right. More to come shortly.

The Lurker in the Dark

This is one of the few instances where a piece of my artwork is directly inspired by real world events. Normally, I can't be bothered to pay attention to the real world, no matter what it does to get my attention, but I saw a story in the newspaper a few weeks ago that genuinely upset me.
It turns out that, in caves all over the U.S. and Canada, a fungal infection has been killing entire cave-fulls of bats. And when you consider that the bat population in a cave can be in the hundreds or thousands or more, that's a lot of tiny little lives lost. This is devastating. Bats are an essential part of our ecosystem, and nothing is being done to prevent this catastrophe. It would seem like a simple fungicide spray would be enough to fix this, but I have no idea if this has even been attempted. It's quite sad.
Anyhow, this piece is actually a part of my Lovecraftian horror collection. As soon as I heard it was fungus that was going all this killing, I thought instantly of the many fungal mythos horrors. I imagined that this fungus was some spore of an otherworldly creature, spawned around and unholy alter that predates man. This alter, deep in the depth of a bat-infested cavern, began spawning its horrible, interstellar spores, which bled into the water of the cavern. As time wore on, many of the caves' more robust creatures adapted to the presence of the toxic mold. While many perished, consumed from within by the cancerous mold, others thrived. One genus of bat in particular, a cousin of the common brown bat, was able to form an almost symbiotic relationshop with the fungus, and used it to grow, and flourish. Nor, after generations of breedings and eons of exposure to the alien blight generated by the inhuman artifact, a single specimen, the perfect hybrid of bat and spore, has emerged into the night, ready to spread its spore into a new world.
I'll be doing a little bit of photoshop coloring on this piece. I'm thinking a simple sepia-toned of B&W color job, to fit with the subject matter. We'll see.

Unexpected Encounter

Hey all! Some of you may know that I'm also involved in another blog with some of my fellow Illustration and Design grads. They're doing something a little more structured than what I'm engaging in here. We take a simple, usually two-word concept and design an illustration around it. It's meant to keep up sharp and get us exposure, and so far it's a lot of fun. Anyhow, this is my first original contribution to this project.
Our current design was based around the idea of Unexpected Encounter. This was fun to do, and I haven't really worked in Photoshop for a while. It was a good experience. Now I'm off to begin the next one.
Being busy. The only way to live.

Pretty Pictures Episode 2

Hey all!
I'm back out at my parent's place again this weekend, which means so decent scanner and no photoshop. Besides that, I'm gearing up to get back into some oil painting and try and buff out that portfolio. Besides a few images I have started, I've got ideas for a couple more that I'm fleshing out. Until I post those sketches and comps, here're a few of my favorite painters to serve as a little free-range inspiration.

Donato Giancola is an absolutely amazing painter. He uses the same traditional style as the old masters, only he paints Gandalf, robots and hot chicks. He's also got a new "how to paint" DVD that I've been meaning to look at. His gallery is at http://www.donatoart.com/

Dan Dos Santos is a truly awesome artist. Not just because he specializes in really awesome covers for (generally stupid sounding) sci-fi and fantasy books, but because he's not shy to show you how he works. Well worth looking at for the tutorials alone.
They, and his gallery, can be found here http://www.dandossantos.com/home.html.

Tom Baxa is a dark fantasy artist extraordinaire. I picked up his DVD on oil painting last summer, and learned quite a lot. I also really enjoy his subject matter, which should come as no surprise to anyone who knows me. Most of his stuff is trading card art, which is a shame because his larger scale paintings are awesome. Check out more of his work http://www.baxaart.com/.

Anyone unfamiliar with Chet Zar probably won't even be reading this blog. Chet is an amazing painter who carved himself out a comfortable niche in the world of dark, surrealist art. I just recently got to see some of his technique through a connection on facebook, and he, too, works very much in the way of the old masters. Find more of his amazing art at http://www.chetzar.com/.

So that's all for now. I'll try and post some more stuff soon.

Coffee Shop Doodles

Hey all! I'm still working on those big projects (about 3 now, all told), so I took a little break down to the not-so local coffee shop in order to get some free drawing done. These little weekly getaways do wonders, truthfully. I can't seem to get any actual sketching done at home, so this is a nice change of pace. I really wish I could get some live model drawing in, but that's seldom ever free these days, so it'll have to wait until I've got an income.

In the meantime, here are my latest creations. I'm kinda glad at how they turned out. I was coming up with stories for these guys as I drew them, which is always a lot of fun. Felt more free that way. So hope you enjoy these while I'm working on bigger things. Anyone who knows me knows that I hate to submit works in progress unless I absolutely have to. So, until that demand arises, enjoy my scary people for now and just be patient.

Zombie Arm!

Just a quick update for now. I'm still working on some fairly large projects, and also trying to get myself a job. So, for now, all I'm posting is a little sketch I did back a few weeks ago.
This guy was your basic physical adventurer type, until he got his right arm replaced with a zombie arm. How it happened, he can scarcely remember. Was it some vile scientist, playing God of Death with his newest hapless victim, or was it his own cohorts, resorting to some horrible concession to black science in order to preserve the life of a comrade? Now, the arm's unrelenting desire for flesh is beginning to creep into the arm's poor owner, who fights with all his will to subdue the horrible blood lust which threatens to overcome him. And the only way he knows how to is to use the arm to perpetrate horrible acts of violence against any living thing. But will bloodshed through combat be enough to satisfy the unholy limbs' hunger?
More on those larger posts to come.

Challenge #1: Bearosaurus, continues

Hey all! So, after all that sketching and concept work, I did a little research to try and get the general shape of a grizzly bear and a tyrannosaurus rex. Rather than bore you with all the hunting for images, I'll just right to the good stuff. Here's the more or less finished line work. Now, it's off to photoshop to give it some color. I haven't done as much photoshop painting as I probably should, so this gives me a great excuse. Stay tuned for more!

Horrors in the Heartland

Hey! It's been a little longer between posts than I'd like, but I've got a few bigger pieces in the works. For now, I've got a new landscape piece complete, another on the way, and some extra stuff that should be fun. For now, another piece in my whole Lovecraftian horror meets real world moments series. So I broke out the moleskin and the watercolors and got to work.
The Dunwich Horror is probably my favorite Lovecraft story. I especially liked the idea of the giant monster that rampages through the little farm community. Here, I just imagine it wandering through some quiet corner of what'd probably be like Wyoming or Utah, some little piece of the middle of nowhere, invisible and gigantic, just roaming the world its meant to destroy.
I'm still playing with this piece on my computer, because, while I do like the way the finished painting looks, the digital piece just doesn't so it proper justice. I'll keep working on it and repost if I can sort out those difficulties.

1st Ever Dawson Drink & Draw

This was a really worthwhile event. We'll be going another in approximately 2 weeks. Though I did a lot that night, most of it was fairly silly. But damn was it fun. I must explore new stuff in subsequent nights.
Also, I have no idea who drew that cloud. It wasn't me, but it works.
And before anyone askes, I'll be doing some true color images soon. Probably.

I do like my ugly character. This guy just had a gargoyle face. I was in the mood to draw someone ghastly looking.

Don't we all need the random hot chick?

Challenge #1: Bearosaurus Rex

I asked the masses for some kind of illustration challenge, and you delivered. Well, my roomate delivered. The rest of you should feel deeply ashamed. Anyhow, I got a request to do something that started as an inside joke, and will potentially evolve into...who knows what?
At some point, we'd started joking about The Bearosaurus Rex, and now, I begin it here. This is the first stage of the illustration, before I go hunting for references. If there's any feedback at this junction, I eagerly await it.

IZM 2010 continues

Just another entry to IZM 2010. Much more to follow. Not to mention I haven't yet added anything from the first Montreal Drink and Draw night. Soon to come.

International Zombie Month 2010!

Hey all! It's that happy time again! The second annual Internation Zombie Month (or IZM, if you're in some kind of a hurry) has just begun. Through both Deviantart and this very blog, I and all my noble artist companions will be adding some new contributions to the world of the undead. Last year, I went for quantity. I produced almost a zombie drawing a day for the entire month, no small feat. While I endeavor to dry and do the same, my priority this year is quality over quantity. I want to produce one or two pieces that are more professional quality, time permitting. I do so enjoy to be busy.

To begin, here's a little something that I actually managed to include at my vernissage. Meet Bill and Scum. Bill was a remnant of last year's IZM. He was my one-day character design challenge to myself. I've altered his face a little bit since the original design. Scum is just a zombie concept I developed over the last few weeks of the semester. My original thought was to make a whole series of zombie post cards to give away as promotional items, but I ran out of both time and money. So, now they can promote me here.
Many more updates on the way!

The Ostrich Riders

I started this over the weekend and finished it today. It's the first of several drawings I intend to do based around the theme of Lovecraftian horrors from every corner of the earth, integrated into our world. More to come soon enough.
These guys rules the African savannah. Whether they're creatures descended from human stock, or ascending towards it is uncertain. All that is known is that these ghastly mounted riders hunt and viciously slaughter all human life that ventures into their territory.
I should mention I did use a reference from www.itsnature.org, though I took some liberties with the lighthing and exact pose.
